Covid-19 and the 2020 festival
The Ballarat Frolic Festival Committee want to acknowledge the extraordinary effect of the Covid-19 pandemic and physical isolation we’re all experiencing right now.
We want to reiterate our belief that as a community we must come together and support each other. If anyone in our local Frolic or queer community is struggling at the moment please let us know so we can do what we can to support you. We are here for you.
We’ve done a lot of thinking about what the Covid-19 pandemic means for the Ballarat Frolic Festival in 2020. Already it has had a big impact.
We had plans to partner with the Melbourne Queer Film Festival (MQFF) for our own little queer film festival in Ballarat this month. This has been put on hold indefinitely until we are in a position to make a decision with MQFF whether to proceed.
We also had plans to run Frolic Cabaret during the Ballarat Winter Festival again after a successful sold-out season last year. Unfortunately, we have made the decision to cancel this event as it is too soon to know if the festival will be going ahead.
With many sponsors, venues and artists doing it tough right now we’ve been anxious to reach out and start planning the 2020 festival. We love our sponsors, venues and artists and know many are hurting right now.
Typically this is the peak planning period for the festival in November. So right now we are asking ourselves the question of, ‘what does the Ballarat Frolic Festival look like in 2020?’ We’d be interested in your thoughts on this question too. Please add your comments below.
At this stage, we’ve made the decision to cautiously proceed with the planning required to go ahead with our festival in 2020. We plan to regularly revisit this decision through the year and build in contingencies where we can as we gain a clearer picture of the road ahead for us all.
Part of this year’s exciting plans involves partnering with event producers and artists to deliver events as part of the festival. We are proceeding with these plans cautiously but also acknowledge that for many it’s hard to focus on anything post-pandemic right now.
If you’re an event producer or artist who is interested in partnering to run your own event during the 2020 Ballarat Frolic Festival we would love to hear from you. You can head to this page for our 2020 Partner Events Producer Guide with all the information you need.
We believe that an important part of this difficult period involves hope that we will get through this and that community connection will be more important than ever once we do. We have hope that the Frolic community will be able to connect physically again soon at a future Frolic event.
Keep looking out for each other – we will get through this!
Much love to you,
